I grew up in the area of the turntable. From mom's single speaker portable unit (and Elvis Presley 45's), to the all-in-one TV/Stereo/turntable unit to the component stereo version (I actually have my still functioning Dual 1226). Later, a reel to reel, then 8-track tapes, then cassettes, then CDs and now digital downloads onto mini personal digital players. But have you noticed, as sound quality gets better and "cleaner", the equipment that plays the music seems to get smaller and less capable of re-producing the musical range that these high tech digital recorded medium are capable of producing? Ear buds, mini shelf systems and teeny-tiny speakers used to play ultra high quality recordings, Hi-Def, Dolby 7.1 surround sound, etc.? Ech! What crap!
Today, I decided that I was tired of the car speakers and the bookshelf speakers. So, to listen to some new music, I fired up the old stereo.
OH, HELL YEAH!! Nothing like twin Yamaha amps driving a pair of late 1970s Cerwin Vega H-15s. Dual voice coil 15" woofers with twin 2 1/2" tweeter capable of 350 watts @ 8 ohms.
This is music...not that tinny ear bud or 5" coffee table speaker crap.
I hope the neighbors didn't mind picking stuff up off their floors after feeling what could have been the New Madrid Fault acting up.

While I'll admit I like the convenience of my mp3s (easier to listen to walking to work, and I can most of my music collection with me at work), you're right, they can't hold a candle to my turn table and vinyls!
